Gingerbread and Christmas

There is a very close and very beautiful relationship between ginger and Christmas. When this time approaches, establishments around the world begin to sell cookies and gingerbread.

Well, its origin is in northern Europe and dates back to the 10th century. Everything seems to indicate that it was the monk of Armenian origin, Gregory of Nicopolis, who was the first to prepare this dessert in all of history.

According to legend, this monk moved from Greece to France in the year 992, taking his Christmas recipe with him. Thus, gingerbread became a very popular dessert during the Christmas holidays.

In its early days, only specialized bakers baked gingerbread. This dessert could only be found in special stores and Christmas markets; gingerbread took all possible forms: hearts, trumpets, swords…

Little by little this type of bread took on an increasingly decorative nuance, beginning to be painted with different colors and even decorated with golden leaves. It is said that gingerbread was also used as a talisman in battle for a time.

As for gingerbread houses, the tradition has its origin in Germany at the beginning of the 19th century. Everything indicates that the first houses were inspired by the story “Hansel and Gretel”.

Currently, cookies and gingerbread are consumed around the world during Christmas. Its popularity has been increasing and today it is one of the best-known Christmas desserts globally.
