Why you should do a double facial cleansing

Cleaning our face every day, even several times throughout the day, is essential when it comes to caring for and protecting our skin, but without excesses, since, as many dermatologists and experts in beauty and cosmetics believe, washing our skin too much can be at least counterproductive.

However, recently there are many experts who advise what is known as double facial cleansing, mainly because it is a tremendously simple and easy technique to follow at home, and which offers -in fact- interesting benefits and qualities. Let’s say that it strengthens and multiplies even more, if possible, the properties that, by itself, daily facial cleansing already offers. But what is it really and what does it consist of? How can we do it easily at home? And, above all, what are its most interesting benefits?

What is double facial cleansing and what does it consist of?

Indeed, as its name might help indicate, the so-called double cleanse consists of washing your face twice before moving on to the serum or moisturizer.

It is, in short, a two-step cleaning process. And, as we will see, instead of using the same cleanser twice (wash, rinse and repeat), when it comes to obtaining a much deeper clean, the first step is to use a cleansing oil -or micellar water-, and then wash it off with foam or cream.

In fact, dermatologists themselves suggest washing your face at least twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed (regardless of whether you’ve even showered or bathed).

That is, it involves the use of a balm, micellar water or a cleansing oil with which you can first break down the makeup, any sunscreen -if you have put it on before- and the sebum present on the surface of the skin. And then follow up with a much deeper water-based cleanse.

This, as we will see in the section dedicated to it, offers interesting benefits, since it helps to eliminate bacteria, sweat and old cells accumulated in the skin, and also offers the possibility of achieving it in a totally effective and simple way. In fact, in the opinion of dermatologists, carrying out a double facial cleansing will allow you to cleanse the pores much more, thus eliminating a greater amount of impurities.

How to do a double facial cleansing? Step by Step

Actually, carrying out a double facial cleansing is as simple as it is easy, and at the same time really simple. Here we explain the two steps you must follow to do it every day, or at least, whenever you need it:

First step

First of all, we are going to start by using an oil based cleanser or micellar water. With it you can clean both the makeup and the accumulation of oil or sebum, which has remained on the skin throughout the day. In short, it becomes an excellent option to remove the oiliest impurities from the skin.

Either of these two products are tremendously useful, as well as adequate. The use of micellar water, consisting of a neutral emulsion without foam, or an oil-based cleanser, will help tremendously when it comes to gently removing make-up and oil, and will gently cleanse the skin.

These products, in fact, are ideal because they break down both makeup and sebum on the skin. Especially when the makeup is oil based. And it is interesting to wash your face until there is not a single trace of make-up visible on the cotton pad (if, for example, you have used it to apply the product gently). It may be necessary to do it three, four or even five times.

It is also recommended to apply the product for one minute, in order to completely remove the accumulation of dirt and oil, pollution, toxins and makeup. Thus, doing it for at least this long will help ensure that you get all the benefits that the cleanser (as well as its ingredients) has to offer.

Do you know why this is so important? Mainly because most people only spend 20 to 30 seconds cleaning their face, so it is not enough time to apply the cleanser correctly. In this sense, experts even recommend increasing the time to two minutes, whenever possible.

Second step

After using micellar water or an oil-based cleanser, we come to the next step. And it is that after you have removed impurities and makeup from the skin, step two involves the use of a good foaming cleanser and water, useful to deepen the pores.

Of course, due to the way in which the different follicles are oriented on the face, it is much better to do it in the following way: wash up and out, which will allow you to enjoy a much deeper clean.

Other aspects to consider

It is essential to take into account the temperature of the water, something extremely important and that, in many cases, is not usually taken into account. Especially if you suffer from acne, or a skin condition such as rosacea, too much heat could cause more problems, as well as irritate it.

Therefore, it is best to always rinse with warm water. That is, neither too hot nor too cold.

How often should you double cleanse your face?

Although it is recommended to rinse your skin in the morning and cleanse it thoroughly at night, in the case of double facial cleansing, it is best to do it only at night, as part of your skin care routine. And it is that the night becomes the best time of day to cleanse the skin in depth, after it is covered with dirt and pollutants from the day, excess oil and, also, makeup.

However, some experts point out that there is no problem or inconvenience if, in addition, you want to adopt this technique in the mornings as well. This is particularly interesting if, at night, while you sleep, your skin also tends to produce excess sebum (you will know this if, when you wake up, your skin looks shiny and suspiciously greasy).

In short, the ideal is to choose a frequency that best suits our lifestyle. And what is even more important:  maintain it daily, which will offer us the possibility of always obtaining the best results.

Of course, in case you forget to do it in the morning or at night, don’t worry, nothing will happen. Just continue with your skincare routine the next day.

Double facial cleansing according to your skin type

As with the application of any other skin product, the use of a certain cleanser, or another, will depend directly on the type of skin we have. In this sense, it is always a good idea to follow some of the advice and guidelines that we propose below. Take note:

  • The best product for your skin type. The best products for a skin type like yours should not only remove all traces of impurities that have remained on the surface of the skin, but also those that improve some of the main signs of aging, such as dullness, loss of firmness and dryness. The advisable thing in these cases is to opt for a cleansing oil, which helps to thoroughly cleanse the skin of the face while balancing and moisturizing.  If it also contains essential oils, vitamins and antioxidants, its benefits are even greater, since they will protect, nourish, restore elasticity and repair the skin’s natural barrier.
  • If you have oily skin. Perhaps you may think that applying a product with a greater amount of oil, when you are already struggling with the typical ravages that oily skin usually causes, is nonsense. But not so much. An oil-based cleanser can help remove both sebum and impurities from the skin. You must bear in mind that oil attracts oil, so a cleanser with these characteristics will help, in a very positive way, when it comes to removing sweat, makeup, dead cells and any other oil that has accumulated on the skin. the skin throughout the day. In case you prefer not to use an oil-based product, you can opt for micellar water, applying it with the help of a cotton pad, rubbing lightly on the face and eyes. As we have already explained to you,
  • If you have normal (or combination) skin. Although it is often said that those who have normal skin are usually quite lucky, since in most cases it is not necessary to take care of it so conscientiously, the same does not happen with combination skin. Combining this skin type (which, as you probably know, consists of both dry and oily skin types), can end up being extremely difficult to tackle. Thus, while part of the face may be dry, other areas may be oily. Hence, it is essential to find products that can help improve the texture, and the complexion, restoring balance. The best choices in this regard are nutrient-rich, ceramide-based, oil-based cleansers, which can help hydrate and plump skin. These products are also useful when your skin is normal.
  • If you have sensitive skin (or is prone to acne). If you have sensitive skin that gets red, irritated and inflamed all too easily, chances are good that you already know the importance of keeping your skin care regimen as simple – and convenient – as possible.  The same thing happens when your skin is prone to acne. In these cases, it is normal to think that a double facial cleansing may not be adequate, or may even end up increasing the chances of irritation. While certain oils and cosmetic products can be comedogenic, clogging pores and therefore increasing not only the risk of acne breakouts, but also the formation of certain related imperfections, such as blackheads. But since cleaning becomes the essential part to be able to enjoy skin that is as healthy and cared for as possible, in case of sensitive or acne-prone skin, it is equally essential. Since this type of skin also tends to dry out or become irritated too easily, it is essential to use cleansers with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant active ingredients, such as glycolic acid, vitamin E, aloe vera, green tea or tea tree oil.

Regardless of whether we have dry or oily skin, even though it is true that certain types of skin can benefit more than others when it comes to enjoying its different qualities, double facial cleansing always provides excellent properties, to a greater or lesser extent.

When used long-term, on a regular basis (and if possible every day), you should notice fewer breakouts – if your skin is acne-prone – and the complexion will appear brighter and more illuminated.

Which are your main benefits:

It is true that washing your face can often be the best option at the end of a long day. And it may be more than enough. However, if you tend to use excessive makeup, or feel that your skin is a bit dirty, double cleansing is quite suitable. Thus, when you use a base, the double facial cleansing will offer you a better cleansing.

For example, a quick clean with the help of a facial wipe may not do much to remove major contamination particles. And if, in the end, all this invisible dirt is left on your skin overnight, you’re not giving your skin cells the best chance to regenerate normally. And the result will be more than evident: the skin is likely to become pale, aged and, in the long run, with spots and wrinkles.

In these cases, double cleansing with the help of micellar water is ideal to remove the layer of makeup, and then let the cleanser really cleanse the skin. In short, it will allow any product you apply later to penetrate deeper, making it much more effective, since clean skin offers the possibility of allowing its active ingredients to penetrate better, and work much more effectively.

And it is very useful to prevent or reduce acne problems, since by cleansing your skin twice, you are ensuring that both the first layer of sebum (or excess oil) is removed, as well as makeup, sunscreen and then the deeper layers of bacteria that may be present in the pores, which can end up aggravating acne.

On the other hand, while there is no rigorous scientific evidence to date that has shown that double cleansing can have anti-aging benefits, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that both pollution and environmental toxins can speed up the natural process of aging of our skin.

When is it advisable to do a double facial cleansing?

Even if you don’t use makeup regularly, it is essential that, at least at the end of the day, you carry out optimal facial cleansing, since even if you have not applied any cosmetics or beauty products, the skin can be easily affected by different pollutants external, as well as by the presence of dead or old cells, or excess fat (or sebum).

In other words, it is essential not only to remove makeup but also the dirt and pollution  that has accumulated on the skin throughout the day. This is essential, as well as important, since its accumulation has been shown to cause oxidative damage to the skin, in addition to contributing to the development of sun spots, wrinkles, expression lines and the breakdown of collagen.

Therefore, double facial cleansing is especially useful when you are prone to acne, or the skin has excess oil or sebum. It will also depend on how the skin is at the end of the day.  Thus, if the skin tends to get oily in the middle of the day, double cleansing can be extremely appropriate. However, if your skin becomes dry or doesn’t get oily until the end of the day, it may not be necessary unless you’re wearing a lot of makeup.

Of course, despite the benefits offered by double facial cleansing, this does not mean that it is an optimal and suitable routine for all situations. On the contrary. Instead of a double facial cleansing, if you have sensitive, dry or rosacea-prone skin (a chronic skin disease that causes the appearance of redness and pimples), experts recommend a first facial cleansing followed by a rinse with Water. In this way, you will be able to prevent the skin from drying out excessively.

The ideal is to always do it at night, or when you have come home after a long day. What’s more, especially when you wake up in the morning, you don’t always have to do a double cleanse. For example, a single water-based cleanse already helps prepare skin to better absorb day creams and moisturizers. So, it is best to save the micellar water for the afternoon.

And, after the double facial, if the skin starts to get irritated it might be a good idea to change the cleanser, before you stop doing it. Why? Very simple: in most cases, irritation usually occurs when products such as bars of soap are used, which can end up altering the important barrier function of our skin. Thus, due to this repetitive cleaning (twice a day), the skin does not have enough time to repair itself normally.

If this happens, the best solution is to use a cleanser that is more suitable for our skin type. And this is essential whether or not you carry out a double cleaning, because when the superficial barrier is repaired, both sensitivity and irritation tend to disappear.

If you have not used makeup, is a double facial cleansing recommended?

If you have used makeup throughout the day, it is clear that a double cleanse will be, to say the least, tremendously useful and appropriate. But even if you haven’t applied any type of cosmetic product to your skin all day, you could also benefit from double cleansing.

Oil -based cleansers, as we have already mentioned, are capable of removing oily substances that naturally accumulate on the skin. What’s more, in case you’ve spent the day at the beach or in the pool, they can also be very helpful when it comes to removing the remains of sunscreen that may have remained.

Once you have applied the first cleansing product, a second product will work more easily, as it does not have to fight against that additional layer of impurities and dirt.

Be careful not to wash your skin too much.

Even if you don’t double-cleanse your skin, you can always run the risk of over-  washing your skin, which can end up causing irritation, redness, and dryness. This will happen to a greater extent if your skin is dry. Whereas, if you have oily skin, over-cleansing will result in more oil production (and a greater propensity for breakouts).

In fact, you will know if you have overdone the cleaning process when some of these signs appear within a few hours. And in the case of oily skin, in addition, it is usual that inflammation also arises, particularly in those who have acne.

But don’t worry: if you use the right cleansers, and follow the correct technique or method depending on your skin type, double cleansing will not only not damage the skin, but will help care for and protect it even more.

Just remember that it’s essential to gently massage your skin, rather than rubbing it aggressively, and hard.

Why does our skin get dirty every day?

Our skin is considered to be one of the largest organs in the body. And, in fact, although little is known about this very interesting quality, the reality is that it plays a fundamental role in keeping us healthy. For example, it helps us regulate body temperature, protects us against illness and injury… Hence, keeping it in good shape is simply essential, as well as essential.

However, throughout the day our skin becomes “dirty” from dirt, pollution and excess oil (produced naturally by the sebaceous glands), which can get “trapped” and combine with all kinds of dirt.

In this sense, as the sebum leaves the different hair follicles, it begins to mix with dirt and sweat, and the presence of a bacterium that we commonly find on our skin, known as P. acnes (Propionibacterium acnes , to be precise), can end up causing the appearance of an uncomfortable and annoying visitor: the dreaded acne.

In the case of men, in fact, this problem can be greater than in women, especially due to the presence of facial hair, which tends to trap a greater amount of both oil and dirt around the hair follicles, which can cause even more inflammation and a greater amount of clogging of the pores.

Hence, men with facial hair are advised to incorporate an additional wash into their daily hygiene and beauty routine.
