Why stress is so bad for skin and accelerates aging

What’s more, in the words of many dermatologists and beauty experts, stress can be the cause of your skin aging rapidly and prematurely, damaging your face and causing a greater appearance of wrinkles, acne, pimples…

The reality on many occasions is that it is not enough just to follow a balanced diet rich in natural foods, drink enough water and practice physical exercise routinely. Also emotional ups and downs, stress and anxiety have a very direct negative influence. Why?

When stress accelerates aging

Different scientific studies have already verified on different occasions that stress releases certain chemical substances in our body, among which one known by the name of cortisol stands out, usually considered as the stress hormone mainly because our body tends to manufacture it when we are faced with situations to help us deal with problems.

In normal situations the different cells of our organism use 90% of the energy in metabolic activities. However, when a stressful situation occurs and we go into an alarm situation, the brain sends a message to the adrenal glands in order to release cortisol, which causes the body to release glucose into the blood to send huge amounts of glucose. Energy to the muscles.

When stress is only punctual, it is beneficial for our body, because it activates us and puts us on alert. But when it is maintained for long periods, and it is also a stress of great intensity, it is very detrimental to our health, thus becoming not only a cause of the appearance of chronic diseases, but also of aging.

In this sense, we must bear in mind that cortisol is not the only hormone that causes said aging. It is also important to name other substances such as adrenaline (or epinephrine), which tend to cause greater cellular oxidation by interfering with the production of insulin, increasing the absorption of sugar and fats in the blood.

As a consequence, our skin ages faster, prematurely. But when that aging is produced by stress, it is possible to alleviate its consequences as long as a much calmer and more relaxed life is maintained, and we move away from all those sensations, situations or feelings that cause us stress.

The solution is more than obvious: reduce anxiety and stress, preferably by eliminating all the situations that create it. One option is to practice physical exercise on a regular basis, which helps us in a very positive way when it comes to de-stressing. On the other hand, we should not forget about certain relaxing activities, such as the practice of yoga and meditation.
