The truth is that, since we were little, we had always been told that we had to brush our teeth after eating, precisely to prevent them from biting and ultimately the dreaded cavities from appearing. And, obviously, we should always do it, whatever we ate, but especially when it came to foods or drinks with excess sugar. However, it seems that this action would not be entirely appropriate.
Apparently, precisely brushing our teeth immediately after having eaten foods or drinks rich in sugars or acids would be not only wrong, but even counterproductive for the health of our teeth.
The reason is very simple: during brushing the acids and sugars tend to expand, so we do not allow the enamel to recover. In fact, brushing may actually remove acid-weakened enamel, as it will penetrate much deeper into the tooth structure.
According to some research carried out in the United States, the most appropriate thing would be to postpone brushing for half an hour when we consume a more or less high amount of foods and drinks rich in sugar or very acidic. A simple example is drinks such as orange, lemon or grapefruit juice, sugary drinks such as soft drinks, candy or cakes and sweets.
Even many specialists advise always brushing your teeth half an hour after eating, since the pH of our mouth decreases, taking a while to return to normal. As a result, if we brush our teeth after eating, this process is intensified, since we distribute the acid throughout the mouth and also push it against the teeth.
During that half hour, the saliva in our mouth helps to reduce the level of acidity, which is why it is better to wait a bit before brushing our teeth.
