What is obesity and its causes?

Obesity is currently considered a serious treatable problem. Knowing what obesity is and its causes helps in weight loss treatment.

At present, obesity is considered a serious problem that affects millions of people in the world, and that has generally increased greatly in recent years due to the increase in poor eating habits and lack of physical activity.

What is obesity?

The obesity is considered a treatable chronic disease, since if the different habits or problems are addressed that generated, you can lose weight and reduce in order to fix it.

It generally occurs when there is excess fat (adipose tissue) in our body, and as we will see below, many are the experts who warn about the serious risks that obesity itself poses both in the short and long term.

Causes of obesity

Although in a sense there are many causes of obesity, for obesity to make its appearance, two fundamental issues must be taken into account that affect most people with obesity:

    • Bad lifestyle habits
Obese people generally tend not to lead a healthy life, they do not tend to have a certainly active physical activity and they tend to eat poorly (highly caloric nutrition), which will lead to weight gain and, therefore, to worsening of the illness.
The sedentary life, therefore, favors the appearance of the great majority of cases of obesity existing today in the world.
    • Genetic causes
Although there are many cases of obesity that are caused by various genetic defects, many specialists indicate that for said obesity to appear, a sedentary lifestyle is necessary, where the person practices little or no exercise and their diet is not healthy, generally consuming an excessive amount of fat.
    • Metabolic causes
as we well know, depending on the physical activity of the person and their own metabolism, the energy use of calories varies from one subject to another. And, as we already learned in the article Basal metabolism: fast or slow metabolism, some people tend to consume more calories than others.
    • Psychological causes
some recent studies have suggested – and demonstrated – the possibility that some cases of obesity have its consequence in various psychological causes.
    • Neuroendocrine
causes these are causes that occur at an organic level due to various problems of the person itself. For example: hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, obesity of origin in the hypothalamus, definition of growth hormone, or Cushing’s disease, among others.
