Tips to relieve a stuffy nose naturally

Nasal congestion causes us to have a stuffy or stuffy nose, which prevents us from breathing normally. Find out how to relieve it naturally.

We have all had a stuffy or stuffy nose at some point. It is what is medically known as nasal congestion or runny nose, and at times when it appears it can become a real discomfort, which prevents us from breathing normally as it is part of the respiratory tract and not just the organ of smell.

Your discomfort is even greater if it is accompanied by other equally common symptoms, such as cough and general malaise (when the cause is a cold or the flu).

The nose is divided into two nostrils through which the inspired air reaches the nasal cavity thanks to the nasal septum. In them we find osteomucous structures known by the name of turbinate’s; among them we distinguish three nasal meatuses that serve as a relationship between the nose and the nasal sinuses and the pharynx.

Basically we can define nasal congestion as difficulty breathing normally due to inflammation of the membranes that cover the inside of the nose, either due to the presence of excessive mucus, having a nasal obstruction or because we have a more or less nasal septum. Less diverted.

Precisely the causes that cause the appearance of a stuffy nose are actually very varied.  We summarize the most common or main ones below:

  • Sinusitis: consists of inflammation of the nasal sinuses due to an infection.
  • Rhinitis and infections: as a consequence of colds or flu processes.
  • Respiratory allergies: as is the case, for example, with allergies to pollen.
  • Obstruction: due to foreign bodies in the nose.
  • Deviation of the nasal septum.
  • Nasal polyps: they consist of completely benign excrescences that form on the nasal mucosa.
  • Nasal tumors: they can be benign and malignant.

In most cases, the causes are trivial and respond mainly to infectious and inflammatory processes, such as the case of flu, colds and sinusitis itself, which cause excessive mucus formation.

How to relieve a stuffy nose to breathe better:

We must bear in mind that depending on the cause of the nasal congestion, the treatment will vary. Thus, for example, when it is due to a cold or the flu, which in turn is accompanied by nasal congestion and runny nose, in most cases it tends to heal on its own without the need to administer any type of treatment.

However, it is true that it is possible to follow some useful tips that will help when unclogging the nose, especially in a natural, easy and simple way. The most suitable are the following.

1. Eucalyptus steam

Also known as eucalyptus vapor, this is a traditional remedy that is especially useful and suitable for relieving the discomfort caused by the accumulation of mucus, and for decongesting both the nose in particular and the respiratory tract in general.

Its preparation is actually very simple: you just have to put water in a saucepan and a handful of eucalyptus leaves, and let the water boil for 15 minutes. After this time, being careful not to burn yourself, you should remove the saucepan from the heat, place it on a plate on a table and stand just in front of it and try to breathe its steam by covering your head with a towel.

Of course, you must be very careful not to go outside or catch cold afterwards, so it is more advisable to do it before going to bed at night.

2. Vinegar with honey

Apple cider vinegar combined with honey acts as a natural expectorant. With it you can prepare homemade syrup, but also a much simpler and simpler remedy for whose preparation you only need a few minutes.

You only need 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons of honey and 1 glass of water. Put all the ingredients in the glass of water, mix a little with the help of a spoon and let the mixture rest for 5 minutes. After this time you should take this remedy immediately.

It is advisable to take this natural remedy 3 times a day for at least 1 week.

3. Infusion of expectorant plants

With certain plants and medicinal herbs we can make an ideal infusion to relieve nasal congestion, especially since they are plants with an expectorant action. Among the most outstanding we can mention the laurel and the sage. With them we will learn to prepare a wonderful infusion.

You just have to put a cup of water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Then, when it reaches this point, pour the water over 1 tablespoon of bay leaves and 1 tablespoon of sage, cover and let stand for 5 minutes. Finally strain and drink.
