The pH of the skin

The pH of the skin is a substance that limits the amount of acidity or softness of an element. Know the pH of the skin and its normal values.

What is the pH of the skin?

The pH is used in Chemistry as a measure of the degree of acidity or alkalinity of an element normally evaluated in its liquid state. In the case of the skin, it is often useful to know which hygiene or beauty products tend to be the most suitable or not, and which ones can harm us.

It is also true that this question will depend on the type of skin of each person, since a person with sensitive skin is not the same as another who does not have it so sensitive.

In a more intelligible way, we will define the pH as the measure that determines the degree of acidity or softness of a product.

The pH contains a certain potential of hydrogen and its quantity indicates if what it exceeds in the medium it measures are hydrogen ions or hydroxyl.

Normal skin pH values

The skin in this case contains a pH between 7, marked as pH-neutral at birth, and between 5.5 and 6 in adulthood. For example, if a product contains a pH lower than the neutral pH, it turns out to be an acidic neutral pH, since hydrogen ions predominate and if the pH is higher it is more alkaline.

For this reason, the components used for hygiene, especially soapy ones, usually contain a pH of 7.5 to 8, since the simple application of the product allows the skin’s pH to rise to 7 and 7.5. Due to this we recommend applying a product that contains a lower pH level.

However, if the total application of bath products does not maintain a pH exactly the same as that of the skin, we should not be alarmed because after a period of time the same pH of the skin is restored and maintains its constant ph.

To conclude we will mention that not only the skin contains the pH value, but also the food we eat every day contains its own pH value and other elements such as hair, nails and mouth also contain their own ph.
