The so-called EPL2R method is one of the best known and widespread, and was formulated in 1970 by the learning psychologist Harry Maddox in his well-known work How to study.
Fundamentally, this method is stated with the initials of the different activities or phases that comprise it: Examine, Ask, Read, Remember and Review (EPLRR or EPL2R).
What is the EPLRR or EPL2R study method?
It consists of taking a quick look at what is going to be studied in order to be able to perceive the general set of it. It is used to determine how much material is going to be studied, taking into account the number of sections, chapters or sheets.
It should be remembered that the study has to be global first and then analytical. The procedure to examine is very simple. If it’s a book or topic, read the titles and subtitles and determine the number of pages. If there is, read the summary and also read the first sentences of each paragraph.
The point is to quickly scrutinize what you are going to study, and for this purpose a kind of telegraphic reading is adequate.
Its objective is to question oneself in order to develop a certain motivation on the subject (something fundamental when studying). It is very important to determine the nature of the question that one poses, since it allows reading trying to find answers.
Remember that as you read, ask yourself what the reading is about: what do I know about the subject? What does the title suggest to me? Is it interesting?
This step will allow you to have an overview of the subject, capturing its theme, something that will provide you with an essential mental scheme for the study.
The objective of this step is to obtain the maximum possible understanding of the text that we are going to study. Try to balance speed and understanding.
In these cases, the pre-reading helps us to give us a general idea of the subject, mainly what it is about and the parts of which it is composed. At this point we are ready to study and, under normal conditions, with an adequate level of concentration, with an active attitude.
Look for information and understand it, it is vital to read to understand, discovering meanings and facts.
It is a leisurely, thoughtful reading, paragraph by paragraph. The vital thing is to make sure that what you read is perfectly understood.
To remember one thing, it is best to repeat it. In these cases, the ideal is to remember what was studied fifteen minutes a day for four days, or even fifteen minutes a week.
But for this phase to be profitable, the principles of motivation, concentration, attitude, organization and understanding must be applied.
Try to always review when you are going to move on to a different topic or a different book. The ideal is to review the syllabus at least once a day, to remember what you have already studied previously.
