Sensitive stomachs

If you have a sensitive stomach, and you suffer from its annoying symptoms, you will probably be interested in discovering what the best treatments are and what cooking and eating tips to follow. Find out more in this article.

There is no doubt that everyone has had a sensitive stomach at some point in their lives: a feeling of intense pressure and churning, upset stomach, a feeling of great emptiness located in the pit of the stomach… In these cases, when it comes to a discomfort punctually, the most common is that the causes are related to a stomach problem; for example, a particular meal may have been unpalatable or heavy, or too much may have been eaten, which in turn causes bloating.

But there are some people who suffer from this problem practically every day, even without having found a clear cause that explains their annoying symptoms. It is said that they have a sensitive stomach, but they do not know for sure if, for example, it is due to the existence of nervous gastritis, Helicobacter Pylori gastritis, or even the presence of what is known as fatty liver, a disorder that is becoming increasingly most common that can cause stomach upset or bloating. Nor can we forget about possible intolerances to certain foods, as is the case of lactose intolerance (which causes discomfort but are not usually serious, as would occur with food allergies), or nerves, stress and anxiety.

In these cases, when you suffer from a delicate stomach practically every day and especially every time you eat, first of all the most recommended thing is to go to your doctor, who could prescribe certain tests and refer you to a digestive specialist. The key, obviously, is to identify the cause that causes that stomach weakness.

Sensitive stomach symptoms

When a person suffers from a delicate stomach, it usually indicates the presence of the following symptoms:

  • Scrambled feeling.
  • Intense pressure in the stomach.
  • Sensation of great emptiness, which is located in the pit of the stomach.
  • Stomach pain and discomfort.
  • Presence of gases.
  • Diarrhea.

Sensitive stomach treatment

The key is to know the real cause that causes our stomach to be so sensitive, since in this case, if there is a medical treatment that helps to solve it or control it, our doctor will prescribe it.

For example, if we are faced with gastritis caused by infection with the Helicobacter Pylori bacteria, the treatments of choice are antacids, histamine 2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors (PPI).

If it is an upset stomach caused by intolerance, the key is to first diagnose what foods cause it and then eliminate them from the diet.

Tips for sensitive stomachs

  • In the kitchen: choose to always cook in the oven, on the grill, boiled or steamed.  Avoid especially elaborate dishes and fried foods. Before cooking the vegetables, remove the skin, since some of them are irritating (this is the case, for example, with tomatoes and peppers). Opt for broths prepared at home, avoiding the industrial ones that you can find in the supermarket.
  • In your daily diet: wash the fruit well and always peel it before eating it. On the other hand, it is advisable to avoid acid fruits (such as citrus fruits or kiwis). Replace coffee with infusions and avoid foods that are very sweet.
  • Eat between 5 to 6 meals a day. It is also recommended to reduce the amount of food you eat on each occasion, to avoid overloading the stomach.
  • Consume more yogurts: preferably low-fat yogurts, which help restore and take care of your stomach.
  • Substitute bread: and opt for toasted bread or extricated bread.
