Mucosan Pediatric: what it is, what it is for and correct dose

Mucosan Pediatric is the most popular children’s medicine against mucus, phlegm and productive cough in colds and flu. Find out from what age it is possible to administer it and the correct dose.

When the child has an excess of mucus and cough, it is common for many mothers and fathers, especially the first-timers, to wonder about what they can do to help the little one when they face a flu or catarrhal illness.

It is true that, nowadays, it is possible to find in pharmacies a wide variety of children’s medicines that fulfill the function of, as in this case, helping to eliminate excess mucus and phlegm, without the need for the due medical prescription.

This is the case of Mucosan Pediatric, the presentation developed by the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim of its popular medicine against mucus and productive cough, in this case for the smallest of the house.

What is Mucosan Pediatric? When to give it to the child?

As you probably imagine, Mucosan Pediatric is a useful syrup for children who are suffering from the flu or a cold, as it is especially indicated to combat excess mucus  on the one hand, and on the other, to relieve a productive cough.

It contains ambroxol as an active principle (3 mg/ml ambroxol hydrochloride syrup), which acts by reducing the viscosity of secretions, facilitates expectoration, and therefore helps in the elimination of excess mucus and phlegm in colds and flu.

From what age can a child be given Mucosan Pediatric?

It is possible to administer Mucosan Pediatric from 2 years of age, although it is recommended that between 2 to 6 years of age, it be administered only under medical prescription.

On the other hand, it is not recommended for children under 2 years of age, as it is completely contraindicated for this population group.

Dosage of Mucosan Pediatric: the correct dose according to age

We must bear in mind, as we mentioned before, that for children between 2 to 6 years of age, it is most advisable that the administration of this medication has been prescribed by the pediatrician.

Once the pediatrician has prescribed it according to the symptoms that the child presents, the correct doses are as follows:

  • Children between 2 and 6 years old: 2.5 ml every 8 hours (morning, noon and night). If the mucus and cough are reduced, from the second or third day it is possible to reduce the dose to 2.5 ml every 12 hours (morning and night).
  • Children between 6 and 12 years old: 5 ml every 8 hours (morning, noon and night). If the mucus and cough are reduced, from the second or third day it is possible to reduce the dose to 5 ml every 12 hours (morning and night).

It is advisable to drink plenty of fluids while the medical treatment with Mucosan Pediatric lasts, since this will help the child to better eliminate excess mucus and phlegm.

Adverse effects of Mucosan Pediatric

Like any other medicine, Mucosan Pediatric is not without adverse effects. Pay special attention if you have severe allergic reactions that cause shock, as well as itching and swelling of the skin or mucous membranes.

On the other hand, common effects such as nausea, numbness of the mouth or larynx, and to a lesser extent diarrhea, vomiting or indigestion can arise.
