What are the symptoms of a missed abortion, and what causes a missed or delayed abortion? We also discover how the diagnosis and the most appropriate medical treatment is.

Sometimes pregnancies do not go as expected and do not reach term because something goes wrong from the beginning. Abortions are very common in first-time mothers with pathologies and sometimes these abortions can be retained within the mother’s womb.

The so-called miscarriage or miscarriage occurs when the fetus inside the placenta dies and the body is not able to recognize the loss of the fetus and does not expel it.

It is normal for the woman to continue to have symptoms of pregnancy and the gonadotropin hormone continues to increase as if it were a normal pregnancy, but the fetus is not really alive.

What is withheld or deferred abortion?

It is a type of abortion in which the fetus dies inside the mother’s body, but which nevertheless does not expel it, neither the placenta nor, ultimately, the rest of its own products that have been formed and developed during pregnancy. That is, it retains them in your body for several weeks.

This abortion can occur days or weeks after the implantation of the embryo in the uterus, but it remains for a long time inside the uterus precisely because the woman’s body has not “realized” that it is no longer alive, so the placenta can even continue to function.

How is it detected?

As the remains are not expelled, the woman will not notice anything, since it is very common that bleeding, which is ultimately one of the most typical and characteristic symptoms of abortion, does not occur.

For this reason, it is very common for the specialist to diagnose the possible existence of an abortion during a routine check-up. In fact, when a pregnant woman suffers a missed abortion, the best way to diagnose it is thanks to the examinations and ultrasounds that the doctor will do.

During the ultrasound, the doctor may observe that there is no heartbeat or an underdeveloped fetus, which is why he will determine the possible miscarriage or silence.

Approximately 20% of pregnancies end in miscarriages or miscarriages and as we have said, it occurs in more cases in new mothers.

Causes of missed abortion

The causes of a missed abortion can be chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus that prevent the fetus from developing further. It can also occur as a result of infections, thrombophilias or diseases that alter the correct and proper clotting of the blood.

As we have already mentioned, women who have a missed abortion usually continue to show symptoms of pregnancy, nausea, vomiting, breast pain, even colic, and in other cases these symptoms begin to disappear.

The logical thing is that the woman expels the embryonic tissue at the beginning of the pregnancy but on other occasions this tissue is found within the woman, so a curettage will be recommended to clean and extract everything that covers the pregnancy.

Symptoms of missed or delayed abortion

Unlike miscarriages (which do produce symptoms such as heavy bleeding, pain and cramps), in the case of missed abortion, it tends to show almost no symptoms whatsoever.

For this reason, the only way to know whether or not you are suffering from a missed abortion is by performing an ultrasound, in which no heartbeat would be shown or appear.

And what happens next? How is the treatment?

As soon as a missed abortion is detected it is necessary to take useful medical measures to help expel the fetal tissue out of the woman’s body. Sometimes certain medications are prescribed that help in this regard, just as the body itself sometimes expels the remains of the pregnancy by itself, partially or totally.

But when this is not possible, or does not help, it is necessary to perform a surgical procedure known as dilation and curettage, whereby the cervix is dilated and fetal tissue is scraped from the uterus.

When is it possible to try a new pregnancy again?

It is advisable to wait at least until the first menstruation arrives, although the most advisable from a medical point of view is to allow between 2 to 3 menstrual cycles to pass.

This will help the woman’s hormones to regulate themselves, and the body will be ready to handle a new pregnancy.

If you have already suffered an abortion you should not worry. Did you know that the majority of women have had a pregnancy that has not reached term, and then they conceive again and have a normal gestation? In most cases, most of these pregnancies end even before the woman finds out that she has been pregnant.

Therefore, above all, remain calm and exercise due caution and care. However, in the case of repeated abortions, it is recommended that medical specialists carry out the necessary studies.
