How to relieve irritation after shaving

The irritation of shaving is very common since with it we injure our skin. Discover some useful tips to relieve the irritation that appears after shaving.

Did you know that shaving removes the hydrolipidic film that protects the surface of the skin, eroding the upper layers? For this reason, shaving, although it is a practice that many men carry out every day, a daily habit of their own from day to day, is actually a very traumatic action for the skin. A useful option to minimize the discomfort caused by shaving, and especially when it comes to minimizing the damage caused by it, is to try to prepare the skin to achieve a healthy shave and damage it as little as possible.

It is very common for related discomfort to appear after shaving, such as a feeling of tightness, burning and redness due to skin inflammation. It is what is medically known as skin erosion, and in more serious cases small pimples may appear that are located at the base of the hair (folliculitis).

Tips to reduce and relieve shaving irritation

Use an aftershave lotion

In the market you can find different lotions, creams and gels specially designed to be used after shaving, as they help to provide hydration and calm irritation. If you want to find an effective solution, but that when applying it does not sting or burn your skin, it is best to opt for alcohol-free lotions.

Natural herbal lotion

If instead of purchasing it you want to make your own natural herbal lotion, you can make it using 3 tablespoons of dried chamomile, 2 tablespoons of dried calendula, half a glass of rose water, 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin and 10 drops of lavender essential oil.

Put the rose water, chamomile and calendula in a clean jar. Reserve for 3 weeks, in a dry and cool place. After this time, strain and add the vegetable glycerin and lavender essential oil. Close and shake well. After shaving you can apply a little of this liquid to relieve irritation.

Avoid products with alcohol

As we indicated in the previous section, it is essential to avoid aftershave lotions with alcohol, since far from relieving the irritation you will only feel a kind of burning sensation when applying it (although it will help reduce it later). In fact, products with alcohol will dry out your skin, dehydrating it and causing the appearance of skin that feels tired, dry.

Apply cold water

While it is true that before and during shaving it is best to use lukewarm or slightly hot water, after shaving it is advisable to rinse your skin with plenty of cold water. It is a useful option because it will help the pores of your skin to close quickly, preventing the production of oil and pimples, and will keep your face free of dirt.

Make your own natural aftershave

In addition to the natural lotion we talked about earlier, you can also make your own  natural aftershave. You only need 10 drops of lavender essential oil, 10 drops of chamomile essential oil, 10 drops of tea tree essential oil and rosehip vegetable oil.

First, put the rosehip vegetable oil in a jar until it almost reaches the top. Add essential oils in the proper amounts. Close and mix well. Then, every time you shave, after rinsing your face you can apply this aftershave.
