Probably there is no discomfort so inopportune and uncomfortable: the itchy throat, which appears at the most unexpected moments and, above all, at the most inopportune moments (for example, just when it gets dark and you are going to bed, when you are talking in public…).
Although it is true that it can arise at any time, especially because we have treated air or talked a lot, it is one of the first signs of the existence of a sore throat, especially when there is pharyngitis, laryngitis and tonsillitis. In fact, when there is pharyngitis, it is very common for it to be accompanied not only by itching, but also by dryness and pain (which can be intense and prevent normal swallowing).
However, we can also mention other common causes that cause the appearance of the annoying itchy throat: existence of certain dryness in the environment due to heating or air conditioning, talking too much or having consumed a drink or food that causes the appearance of irritation.
Natural tips to relieve itchy throat
Gargle with water and salt
They are a very useful natural option, easy and simple both to prepare and to apply: gargle with water and salt. While on the one hand, warm water helps to moisturize and soothe itching, salt is able to absorb water from the cells of the mucous membrane of the throat, reducing swelling.
To make it you just have to heat a glass of water a little, not too much, and add a teaspoon of sea salt. When the water is lukewarm, gargle for 30 seconds at a time before spitting out the rinse. It is advisable to repeat the process 3 times a day.
Gargle with water and baking soda
In addition to gargling with warm water and sea salt, there is also another simple natural remedy that is very useful for relieving an itchy throat: gargling with water and baking soda. On this occasion, baking soda is just as useful as salt because it helps relieve pain and itching.
To prepare this remedy you must follow the same steps that we indicated in the preparation of the warm water and salt gargle: put water in a glass and heat it a little. When the water is lukewarm add a teaspoon of baking soda and mix well. Finally gargle for 30 seconds each time, repeating up to 3 times a day.
It is interesting to know that you can choose between gargling with water and salt or gargling with water and baking soda or alternate them, but never exceeding a maximum of 3 times per day, since otherwise you will only get your throat irritated even more.
Warm lemon juice and honey
We are probably facing another of the most popular and traditional remedies that exist when there is discomfort or pain in the throat. The honey helps to “lubricate” and soothe the throat, while the lemon juice acts as an antiseptic and antibiotic.
You just have to squeeze a lemon and reserve its juice. Heat it up a bit and set aside until lukewarm. Then add a teaspoon of honey, mixing well with the help of a spoon. Sip it slowly.
Herbal sweets, such as the popular Swiss herbal sweets, are also excellent at reducing the discomfort caused by an itchy throat. At this point, when you notice that your throat is dry and it starts to itch, just suck on a Swiss candy, and never chew it. Of course, eucalyptus candies are not recommended in these cases.
