How to relieve a hangover naturally with these home remedies

When you have a hangover after drinking a lot of alcohol, there are some useful tips and remedies to help you relieve it naturally. We explain the most recommended ones.

Hangover is a symptomatic picture of general malaise that appears as a result of excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages. However, it is a condition that is not serious enough for an ethyl coma to occur, but it can cause death from respiratory depression.

Among its most common symptoms we find mainly headaches (which in many cases can be truly terrible), a feeling of intense thirst as a result of dehydration caused by the breakdown of alcohol in the body, digestive and gastric problems, muscle weakness and pain (both abdominal and muscle), as well as memory loss.

As we saw in a previous article, in which we wondered why the hangover appears, it arises from the action of alcohol as an inhibitor of the functioning of vasopressin hormones, since when we drink this type of beverages the water is eliminated when urinating in greater quantity, so that more mineral salts and other essential compounds for our body are eliminated.

If you’ve drunk excess alcohol and are already beginning to experience some of the most annoying, painful and uncomfortable hangover symptoms, a helpful option is to know how to relieve your hangover naturally, with all-natural tips. We will tell you about the most recommended:

1. On an empty stomach drink warm water with lemon

Warm water with lemon, taken on an empty stomach, is an excellent detoxifying remedy, which helps you eliminate toxins and impurities that have accumulated in your body as a result of abusive alcohol consumption. In addition, it will be useful to regulate your metabolism effectively.

On the other hand, it is interesting to prevent –and avoid- the action of free radicals, thanks to its antioxidant action. To make the hot lemon water you just have to put the equivalent of a glass of water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Meanwhile, wash an organic or organic lemon well, cut it in half and squeeze it to obtain its juice. When the water boils remove from the water, serve in a glass or cup and let it cool a bit. Finally add the lemon juice and drink.

2. at breakfast time: you opt for a detoxifying or energizing breakfast

3. Soups with rehydrating action

Since alcohol consumption causes dehydration, one of the basic objectives to alleviate and treat hangovers is to re-hydrate the body. In this sense, you can opt for wonderful soups with rehydrating action, which precisely help to provide hydration to the body. We propose two delicious recipes:

Garlic soup recipe

To make this soup you need 6 slices of bread, 3 cloves of garlic, and 3 tablespoons of olive oil, water and salt. It is as simple as putting a clay pot on the fire with a little olive oil. Peel the garlic and cut them into pieces, adding them to the casserole when the oil is very hot.  Let them brown. While cutting the bread into thin slices, and mix it with the oil and garlic. In a separate saucepan add water and boil for a few minutes. Add the hot water to the casserole, to serve very hot.

Onion broth recipe

To make this broth you need an onion, water and a pinch of salt. Peel the onion and cut it into pieces. Put the equivalent of two cups of water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. When the water starts to boil adds the onion and let it boil for 5 minutes. Finally strain and drink.

4. Medicinal infusions with rehydrating action

In addition to the soups and broths that we have talked about previously, you can also opt for certain medicinal infusions that will help you reduce the most annoying symptoms of a hangover:

Chamomile infusion

It is an interesting infusion for its gastric and digestive qualities. To make it, you only need a teaspoon of dried chamomile flowers and the equivalent of a cup of water. Put the water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Before it starts to boil add the chamomile, and boil for 3 minutes. After this time, turn off the heat, cover and let it rest for another 2 minutes. Strain and drink.

Pennyroyal infusion

Like chamomile, pennyroyal is interesting in the event of a hangover due to its carminative qualities (it helps to expel gas), calms stomach pain and also stimulates the liver. To make the infusion, follow the same steps indicated in the chamomile infusion recipe that we talked about earlier, but substitute the teaspoon of chamomile for the teaspoon of grapefruit. If you wish, you can sweeten it with a little honey.

Although it is not at all recommended to drink alcohol, there are a number of useful tips for when you decide to drink an alcoholic beverage. Take note:

  • It is vital to avoid drinking alcohol on an empty stomach.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol with fatty and strong foods.
  • Alcohol should be taken in moderation, taking into account our body’s ability to eliminate it.
  • It is more advisable to drink at the same time as you eat, since this way the stomach will take up to four times longer to absorb it.
