Recommendations to lower and reduce swelling after the extraction of wisdom teeth (third molars) or wisdom teeth.
Wisdom teeth are the third molar, which tend to appear between the ages of 16 to 25. For this reason they are also called wisdom teeth, because it is the age in which the person has a more developed own judgment.
Although it is possible that the wisdom teeth do not appear or even partially appear or are retained (or included), which can cause different oral problems.
There are a total of four wisdom teeth (specifically one for each quadrant of the mouth), and they are located in the last position of the tooth line, just at the bottom of the mouth.
It is common to recommend the extraction of wisdom teeth when they damage or affect the other teeth as they develop, because they come out crooked or partially, eroding the surrounding teeth, or because they are simply retained and in a horizontal position.
In this sense, if they are included (they are located under the gum and do not come out), their removal is also recommended, since they can cause not only related problems such as dental crowding, but also cysts and different associated health problems.
In addition to the care after the extraction of wisdom teeth, and since the extraction is a traumatic condition for our mouth, it is usual that depending on the difficulty that the extraction of the tooth itself posed for the dentist or maxillofacial surgeon -and the damage caused to the gums and jaw- it is common for a swelling to appear on the face in the first few days.
First hours after extraction of wisdom teeth
For the first two hours, placing ice packs or some ice rolled up with a cloth on the side of your extraction face will help reduce swelling.
It is advisable to apply this local cold for 5 minutes, resting for 15 minutes, and then apply the compress for another 5 minutes and resting for another 15 minutes, and so on for 2 hours.
Recommendations for the following days
Swelling may be common to appear during the first 48 to 72 hours.
After the application of the cold during the first 2 hours, we must move on to the application of moist heat after 24 hours have elapsed (1 day from the extraction).
To do this, you can heat a little water and soak a cloth, which you will place on the side of the face where the swelling is for 5 minutes, resting for 15, and so on.
