How to make a natural cough syrup: 3 homemade recipes

If you have a cough, a natural option to relieve it is to make one of the 3 medicinal syrups that we propose in this article. We explain how to make them easily at home.

After the arrival of low temperatures also come the annoying consequences of colds.  Cough, of course, is among the first to become one of the most uncomfortable, annoying and of course also common symptoms. At all hours of the day or even when we sleep, it does not give us respite.

But why do we cough? We must first take into account something fundamental: although we think otherwise, the truth is that coughing is a completely normal reaction of our body. It is an involuntary reflex whose main objective is to keep the airways clear. It is activated for example in order to eliminate mucus, pathogens or other secretions.

This stimulus is in many cases caused by the presence of mucus, or by the presence of a foreign body located in the respiratory tract. Nor can we forget that it can actually be a symptom of certain diseases, such as asthma, bronchitis or the cold itself.

And how is the cough reflex activated? When, for example, there is excess mucus or we involuntarily breathe a particle of dust or a piece of food without expecting it, the receptors present in the mucous membranes of the trachea and bronchi become irritated, causing a cough that, incidentally, we cannot stop voluntarily.

For those cases in which the cough is due to a respiratory disease, there are natural remedies that can help us, such as homemade cough syrups. In this case we bring you a few recipes for syrups so that they can alleviate the cough.

3 natural cough syrups to make at home

Flaxseed cough syrup

When we have a dry cough, a good natural alternative to drug syrups is flaxseed syrup.

Ingredients:

  • 2 or 3 tablespoons flax seeds (linseed)
  • 1 cup of water
  • The juice of 1 lemon
  • Honey

Preparation:

To do this, we are going to boil flaxseeds (2 or 3 tablespoons) together with a cup of water and leave it until the water has a slimy consistency. Then we strain it to remove the remains of seeds and add the two inevitable ingredients: lemon juice and honey in equal parts. Take one tablespoon of syrup at a time, and remember that due to its honey content it cannot be used in children under one year of age. .

Onion cough syrup

Another natural cough remedy that you may already know is onion. This is because the onion has astringent properties. Its preparation will not present major inconveniences and can be a good solution for cough and -in addition- natural.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of onion
  • 4 cups of water
  • 2 and a half cups of brown sugar
  • 6 tablespoons of honey

Preparation:

First cut the onion into very small pieces, you will need about 4 cups full of chopped onion.  We put them together in a pot with 4 cups of water, two and a half cups of brown sugar and honey (about 6 tablespoons will suffice). Cover the pot and simmer over low heat for 4 hours. Then we are going to strain the preparation and place it in a clean glass jar with a hermetic lid. With that you will have this ideal syrup to relieve cough that you can take a tablespoon when you need it.

Herbal syrup for cough relief

If you like spices and aromatic herbs to incorporate into food, in this case we suggest using them to relieve coughs.

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon chamomile
  • 1 teaspoon linden
  • 1 teaspoon of green anise, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon sweet cloves
  • Water
  • The juice of 1 lemon
  • Honey

Preparation:

For this we will place in a pot, chamomile, linden, crushed anise, sweet cloves, pour water and boil it for 3 minutes. We let it rest for 5 minutes and strain it. Finally we add honey and lemon juice. We also place it in a tightly covered glass jar and leave it in the fridge. To alleviate the cough you should ingest two tablespoons of this herbal syrup, three times a day.

As you will see, there are different options, depending on the ingredients that each of you have on hand at home. We hope that these natural syrups help you to remove that annoying cough. And remember that there are multiple natural remedies that can replace or complement traditional medicine and that will help you fight coughs or other flu symptoms either in the form of juices or smoothies or as infusions.
