How to avoid stress at Christmas

The so-called Christmas stress is very common, and affects many people each year during the holidays. We offer you some tips so that stress does not appear this Christmas in your life.

What is fun for many and partying for others can be a great stress. Christmas ends up being almost holiday periods in which family and friends get together to be together around dinners, lunches and other activities.

The stress can occur in many people, mainly due to the commitments, and the number of lunches and dinners to be prepared. We give you some tips on how not to stress over Christmas.

Facts about stress level

Various studies assure that stress during the Christmas holidays is more common than one might imagine. In total, 65% of the adult population experiences situations of stress and anxiety both before Christmas and during these holidays. Social commitments end up exhausting, and are the main causes of stress.

Precisely, this accumulation of social commitments affects 48% of the population, general fatigue and Christmas messages, 30%, while others are stressed by reconciling work with family life.

Among the most common symptoms are insomnia (65%), headaches (52%), muscle aches (80%) and problems associated with the stomach, due to binge eating these days. Of these people, 70% have negative or recurring thoughts, and 72% show much greater irritability than at other times of the year.

Helpful tips to prevent Christmas stress

Organization, the basis of everything

Stress can be alleviated with planning ahead of the upcoming parties. Especially if you cook at home, you must have a planning about the meals (know what to buy, and who will be the guests …) to have everything done before stress takes its toll.

Moderate meals

It is somewhat difficult to eat less during these days, but it can be achieved if we set our normal eating habits, with something sweet. For example, you can add greens and vegetables to the main dishes, skip the vermouths and fragment the desserts for different days, and not eat it all on Christmas Eve.

Moderation and balance should always be sought in meals, otherwise we can have serious stomach problems.

Exercise

If we organize ourselves, in Christmas parties, we have time for everything. Before or after our social commitments, it is fine to continue with our daily routine, and do some sports.

Going for a run, doing sit-ups, going to the gym on open days … all of this will help us take care of our health and open our minds.

Moderate the use of alcohol

In the same way that we do with food, during these days we usually drink a little more than normal. But we should never do it in excess, alcohol does not feel good and we can be annoyed during the key days of the holidays. This also causes stress.

Peace at the table

They are days of recollection, of love and peace, and of avoiding topics of conversation that can lead to discussions at the table. It is better to play games, talk about things relaxed and of little concern so that there are no arguments or out of tune.

Know how to say no

Business dinners, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve engagements… There really is no time for so many engagements. For this reason, it is essential to learn to say no, as it will remove more than one headache and eliminate stress. Before running or being bad in a place, it is better to say no, and we avoid long faces and unnecessary bad times.

Avoid queues when shopping

If we anticipate that we are going to be stressed, it is better not to leave shopping until the last minute. Planning involves making lists with the gifts that we must make and buying them a month in advance. In addition to saving money, we will avoid masses of people, desperate last-minute purchases and the fact that, perhaps, what we want is exhausted.

Enjoy the parties wherever you are

Many people will not have the expected vacations, will be away from their family or will spend part of the time working. There is no use lamenting. The best option is to spend Christmas to the best of your ability, enjoying every moment, whether with co-workers, alone or with family.
