Fluid retention: causes, foods to avoid and remedies

Fluid retention is a problem that can affect many people. But knowing what causes it, its causes and how to avoid it is essential. Among them: sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, hormonal problems and working standing up, among others.

As its name suggests, fluid retention consists of a severe accumulation of all kinds of substances in a liquid state throughout the tissues of our body. From a medical point of view it is also called edema.

Among the main causes that produce the appearance of these inflammations, it stands out above all problems related to the circulatory system, heart failure that can later translate into a clear case of myocardial infarction or also some liver and kidney problems

It is a condition that women tend to suffer more at an advanced age and therefore it is very common to see their lower extremities swollen, a discomfort that can considerably limit their mobility and therefore make them more exposed to adverse effects of leading a very sedentary life.

What are the causes of fluid retention?

Some of the main reasons why liquids are retained include:

Improper diet and poor nutrition

Many people often do not drink enough water to be able to eliminate both the liquids themselves and the toxins. And it is that if our body does not have a level of liquid both sufficient and constant, when we drink liquid the body stays with it, reserving it.

Hormonal problems

This problem happens when the thyroid gland does not secrete enough hormones. This occurs mainly after the age of 30, when hormone levels begin to decrease, although this reduction in hormones can also occur when stress appears in our lives, or if there is a hormonal problem.

Excess salt or sugar

Both excess sugar (to a lesser extent) and salt cause us to retain more water, so experts recommend moderating their consumption.

Some medications

Medications such as contraceptives, anxiolytics, antidepressants or corticosteroids often have side effects, and one of them is to retain fluids. Of course, as soon as the medication is finished, the body tends to recover its normal process to eliminate toxins.

Sedentary lifestyle and an inactive life

We have always talked about how unhealthy a sedentary lifestyle is, as well as maintaining and leading an inactive life, because if we do not exercise, toxins cannot be eliminated through sweat, in such a way that they accumulate in the body. Remember to practice exercise, if possible daily.

Foods that cause fluid retention

As we mentioned, there are different causes of fluid retention, a problem that -in fact- can lead to the appearance of another “symptom” closely related to it: abdominal swelling.

Among these causes, we find eating an inadequate diet, while not drinking enough water for the body to function properly.

In this sense, there are a number of foods that can cause, to a greater or lesser extent, the appearance of this annoying – and common – health problem.

Fundamentally, both the edema and the circulation of liquids and the retention itself are due to the food that we find in the water. Of these, sodium becomes the one that absorbs the most water.

Therefore, the richer the food, the more likely it is that fluid retention may appear.

Among these foods rich in sodium, we find the following, which we should avoid precisely when we want to avoid fluid retention and, therefore, abdominal swelling.

  • Canned products.
  • Sausages and cold cuts.
  • Pickles (for example, olives).
  • Margarine and butter.
  • Cheeses
  • Bread and derivatives.
  • Broth tablets.
  • Salty snacks.

How can fluid retention be prevented?

There are some useful tips that can be of great use to you when it comes to avoiding the annoying and uncomfortable accumulation of liquids in your body. We discover the most interesting below. Take note:

  • Avoid standing for a long period of time. It is advisable to sit down and rest all our muscles in order to promote circulation through our entire body again.
  • Put your feet up from time to time. Especially if we have had a very busy day and suffer from pain, discomfort and swelling in our lower extremities.
  • Reduce sodium intake. The consumption of this element may be closely linked to the appearance of fluid retention. For this reason, it is advisable to reduce salt intake at any meal or dinner.
  • Increase the consumption of diuretic substances. Among which all kinds of fruits, medicinal plants and vegetables stand out. Through the next point we will delve more into this topic. It is also recommended to drink at least two liters of water a day.
  • Healthy and balanced diet in certain foods. Certain canned fish should be avoided as it has a higher sodium level along with those that are smoked or salted, such as cod. There are also no problems eating fresh and lean meats as long as they are not stuffed.

Five medicinal plants to say goodbye to fluid retention

In this next point we are going to describe in great detail up to five medicinal plants that are also going to be the most beneficial to practically say goodbye to fluid retention:

  • Mistletoe: This medicinal plant, apart from increasing urine production, is also capable of eliminating toxins or the most harmful substances that are stored through our body, such as uric acid or urea.
  • Anise: Its consumption is recommended especially in middle-aged women. And it is that apart from helping you say goodbye to fluid retention, it also helps to regulate your menstrual cycle in a more orderly way.
  • Red Annemarie: It is a plant that contains all kinds of mineral salts such as potassium, an element that promotes circulation throughout our body. It is also one of the richest in coumarone and flavonoids.
  • Parsley: Parsley is also an ally to take into account to say goodbye to fluid retention.  This is because it is also an inexhaustible source of mineral salts and elements that considerably help to get rid of those edemas. It also detoxifies our entire urinary system and is therefore most beneficial for the bladder.
  • Horsetail: Already in ancient Rome, this medicinal plant was taken, which also considerably favors the fluids to flow normally around our entire body. It also strengthens our entire complexion along with hair and nails.
