Cocoa cream is a wonderful -and delicious- option for breakfast or for a snack, especially for those who are passionate about cocoa; yes, as long as it is consumed in moderation and never in excess. In fact, it becomes a snack solution for the little ones, so that today it is very easy to find cocoa creams in most supermarkets. Although there is no doubt that the best is to opt for the cocoa and hazelnut cream for its flavor and aroma.

And what are the most popular brands in this regard? Without a doubt, two stand out par excellence: the traditional Nocilla (very popular in Spain because it has been made for many years in our country), and  Nutella.

However, most cocoa creams that we find on the market today have some problems, especially nutritional ones. In many cases, half of the product is sugar, so it is common for a container of only 400 grams of product to provide 230 grams of sugar!

In addition, the negative of this type of product is not only its high sugar content, but also the fats used in its preparation, since they usually have either trans fats or a large amount of saturated fats, which favor the accumulation of both cholesterol and triglycerides in our arteries and therefore increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

For this reason, the recommendation is more than evident:  do not abuse this type of commercial cocoa cream, or avoid its consumption when we observe that its sugar and fat content is very high, and above all, in its preparation, not recommended fats (such as could be the case  of palm oil). Hence the importance of always reading the labels of the food products we buy.

Cocoa and hazelnut cream recipe

The  hazelnut and cocoa cream recipe that we propose below is a simple but healthier option to learn how to prepare your own cocoa cream. However, if you are vegan or vegetarian in the following section you will find a recipe specially designed for you.


  • 50 grams cocoa powder
  • 100 grams toasted hazelnuts
  • 45 grams of sugar
  • 50 grams unrefined sunflower oil
  • 100ml whole milk (can be substituted for skimmed milk)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation of the cocoa and hazelnut cream:

  1. Put the toasted hazelnuts in the food processor, food processor or blender jar. Crush them well until the small pieces that remain turn into powder.
  2. Add the sunflower oil, sugar, cocoa powder, milk and vanilla extract.
  3. Beat everything again well until you see that all the ingredients have been perfectly integrated. You can continue beating until it becomes a uniform cream and maintains the texture that you like the most.
  4. Now, to finish, put the cocoa and hazelnut cream in a glass jar with an airtight seal and reserve in the fridge for 1 or 2 hours, before consuming it. In this way you will get its texture to improve.

Vegan cocoa and hazelnut cream recipe

Since in the previous recipe we have used milk of animal origin, it is also possible to substitute it with vegetable options so that vegans and vegetarians can enjoy the flavor of this wonderful cream. So, we are going to get going and we are also going to learn how to make a vegan cocoa and hazelnut cream.


  • 50 grams of cocoa powder
  • 100 grams toasted hazelnuts
  • 50 grams brown sugar
  • 50 grams coconut oil (unrefined sunflower oil can be substituted)
  • 100ml vegetable drink (you can use the one you like best: soy milk, oat milk, almond milk…)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


  1. Put the toasted hazelnuts in the blender jar and grind them well until they turn into hazelnut powder.
  2. Meanwhile, you need to melt the coconut oil in case it has solidified. To do this, heat it a little in a bain-marie until it becomes liquid.
  3. Then, once the hazelnuts are ground, add the melted coconut oil, brown sugar, cocoa powder, your favorite vegetable drink and vanilla extract.
  4. Beat everything again until the ingredients have been integrated.
  5. To finish, put the cream in a glass jar with an airtight seal and let it set aside in the fridge for 1 or 2 hours.
