Chronic hepatitis: symptoms, causes and treatment

Chronic hepatitis is liver inflammation over a prolonged period of time, caused mainly by viruses or liver pathologies. Find out more about this disease.

It goes without saying that the liver is one of the most important organs in our body. This is where all the blood from the intestinal system arrives to later convert all the nutrients, bacteria and toxins into chemical compounds that are much easier for our body to assimilate or excrete.

It is also here where the synthesis of bile takes place, a substance that is released through the duodenum and that is extremely important since it promotes better digestion of all the fats we eat.

Now that you have known the importance of this organ, next we are going to talk about the topic that really matters. And it is none other than hepatitis, a disease that basically consists of inflammation of the liver and that can appear for numerous reasons that we will break down through the following lines:

What are the causes of chronic hepatitis?

Hepatitis is still a mere inflammation of the liver caused by a virus, which can appear in this body due to malfunction of the organ, caused in turn by the following conditions:

  • The liver is also responsible for producing glycogen, a component that transforms glucose in order to level blood sugar levels. However, when an alteration appears in this process, what is called hypoglycemia can appear.
  • Less bile production. Without bile, it would be impossible to absorb fats that are stored so much in our intestines. The hepatitis virus can alter the segregation of this important substance.
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol and medications. We will not tell you anything new by saying that alcohol is one of the main causes of hepatitis and subsequent liver cancer. Both alcoholic beverages and the massive intake of any medication can cause alterations in the proper functioning of the liver.
  • Fatty liver. The accumulation of fat in the liver is normal, but when this accumulation is excessive, a pathology known medically as hepatic statuses occurs. When statuses occurs, an even more serious variation can occur, in turn leading to  hepatomegaly, which consists of enlargement and inflammation of the liver accompanied by excessive accumulation of fat (steatohepatitis).
  • Low defenses. Hepatitis can also be preceded by all kinds of infectious viruses and bacteria due to our immune system not working properly. This later causes this condition to move and deposit directly in the liver causing a clear case of chronic hepatitis.

What symptoms appear before chronic hepatitis?

The symptoms of acute hepatitis can be relieved with the mere passage of time. However, if this process gradually becomes chronic, it is very normal for other more serious symptoms to appear.

In the first place, the affected person suffers from a general malaise accompanied by severe fatigue and a total lack of concentration. To this we must also add a high fever that can reach 39 degrees.

On the other hand, the appearance of muscle pain and pain in all types of joints together with a strong headache is also common. Lastly, the patient may lose their appetite and may also suffer from diarrhea. It is even possible that over time you suffer from photophobia (phobia of light). Before the appearance of any of these symptoms, it is very important to go to the doctor in order to tackle this condition as soon as possible.

What treatment exists for chronic hepatitis?

Here it depends a bit on the type of hepatitis that the patient is suffering from (A or B). But in general terms, the best thing to do is to follow the following treatment, regardless of which one you have:

  • Healthy and balanced diet. Diet is a very important factor in treating chronic hepatitis. Or at least significantly reduce their symptoms. In this sense, it is very important to take all kinds of nutrients such as iron, calcium and all kinds of vitamins.  The consumption of meat should not be abused either, since its high fat content can later cause hepatitis.
  • Reduce the consumption of alcohol. We have already explained in other articles that the massive intake of alcoholic beverages can later lead to all kinds of liver diseases.  Therefore, it is very important to remove alcohol from our daily diet. Surely our health will thank us.
  • Very specific medications. There are increasingly more specific drugs for hepatitis that are usually given by skin injection. Although for these cases it is best to contact a qualified doctor.
