Can you blow your nose well? You may be doing it wrong

How to blow your nose correctly? The truth is that if you do it wrong, your risks to your health are even greater, since new respiratory infections can arise. Find out how to do it right.

We are suffering from an allergy, a cold or a cold, we have a lot of mucus and the infection in turn tends to irritate our nose. What do we do? Very simple: we take a handkerchief or a napkin and blow our nose in order to provide some relief by cleaning the nasal passages, thanks to this act as common as it is simple and every day.

But did you know that it is quite possible that you are not doing quite right? What’s more, you will probably be surprised to discover that even an act as normal as blowing your nose has its own technique, especially to do it properly and not suffer its consequences.

Because, indeed, sounding bad and inappropriate can be risky, although it may seem somewhat incredible as well as surprising.

What are the consequences of sounding bad?

It is quite possible that when blowing yourself you make the mistake of covering both nostrils. However, as we will see in the next section, the most correct thing to do is to do it by blocking one first and then the other.

If we do it in the wrong way, we end up blowing our noses badly, and the result could be even worse than expected: not only are we not able to expel those annoying mucus from the body, we end up causing sinusitis if the accumulation of secretions is in the airways high as a result of poor drainage; or pneumonia or bronchiolitis if those same secretions collect in the lower respiratory tract.

But blowing bad breaths not only produces the aforementioned respiratory conditions, as they can also end up causing rhinitis, pharyngitis and otitis.

How to blow your nose correctly?

There are a series of basic recommendations that can help you when it comes to blowing your nose correctly. Take good note.

1. Use a saline solution before and after blowing your nose

Saline or sea water is especially helpful in helping you to better expel mucus, especially if it has hardened inside your nose.

Therefore, before blowing your nose – and whenever you can – try to first spray one side of your nose with this physiological serum, and then do the same with the other. Wait at least a minute and blow yourself carefully, also first on one side and finally on the other.

On the other hand, it is equally useful to end with a nasal wash. For example, you can use the same physiological saline or sea water, and put it by tilting your head to the right and pour the liquid into the left nostril, and then vice versa.

2. Blow gently

Especially avoid blowing your nose by exerting a lot of force because you can generate a lot of pressure and make the mucus goes to the sinus passages, spreading the infection.

Therefore, the best thing to do in the first place is to sound you delicately and as softly as possible. You may think that if you do it like this you will not be able to remove all the mucus that you could remove if you did it with greater force, but both your nose and your ears will thank you (because there is also the risk that the mucus reaches the middle ear ).

3. Do it on one side only at a time

If you tend to blow on both sides at the same time, it may be that you also make the mistake of covering both nostrils even if you don’t realize it.

Although you may think that this will help the mucus and secretions come out better when coming out on both sides, the reality is very different: it is much better to blow each nasal passage separately, therefore always avoiding doing both together.

As we can see, they are three basic tips that are actually tremendously easy to follow, which both our nose and our ears will thank us very much when it comes to practicing them.

Why? For something very simple: you will be able to better expel both mucus and secretions, and you will also prevent possible infections and other respiratory diseases by keeping your nose clear.
