Barley water: benefits and recipe (how to make it)

Easy to make and full of benefits, barley water is a wonderful natural drink.

The  barley drink, also popularly known by the name of barley water, is one of those drinks that, in most cases, we must make at home to enjoy it, since it is not a liquid as widespread as others natural drinks (as for example it could be the case of aubergine water ). For this reason, we propose a wonderful recipe with which you will learn to make barley water easily at home.

But we must not confuse it with the so-called barley milk,which has a somewhat thicker appearance when the cooked barley flakes are crushed and included in the drink in a totally natural way. And why do we say “misnamed” barley milk? Mainly because it is not dairy, despite the fact that this type of plant-based beverages are also known as such (as is the case with soy milk or rice milk).

The truth is that barley water is a wonderful drink, full of health benefits, which can become an excellent natural liquid to drink water in a totally natural – and delicious – way every day. Of course, if we are going to take it daily, it is not recommended to sweeten it so much, and to try to take it naturally.

Ingredients

  • 50 g of barley grains
  • 1 l of water
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • Lemon peel (to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Elaboration

  1. Put the barley grains in a bowl of water, and let them soak for 15 minutes. Then drain them very well and reserve.
  2. Put the water in a saucepan over the fire and add the barley grains after soaking them. Cook over low heat for approximately 30 minutes.
  3. Halfway through cooking, add the lemon peel and the cinnamon stick.
  4. After this time, turn off the heat and let it rest until the drink is cold.
  5. To finish, strain the barley water and store in a glass bottle in the fridge.

If you wish, you can add the lemon juice to taste, and sweeten with panela, brown sugar or honey.

What benefits does barley water offer us?

The barley water is obtained from cooking beans barley, which stands out as a very ancient cereal, which was already consumed by Greeks and Romans, being originally from the area of Israel. It is scientifically known by the name of Hordeumvulgare, and it is known not only for its nutritional richness, but also because it is usually and traditionally a cereal used for making beer.

In fact, from a nutritional point of view, barley water surprises with its richness in healthy fatty acids, standing out especially for its content in omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9. In addition, it also provides vitamins (especially group B and also vitamin E) and minerals (such as magnesium, calcium, iron, copper, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, selenium and manganese). It also provides complex carbohydrates and fiber.

Among other interesting qualities, the natural barley drink is ideal for people with constipation and diabetes, thanks above all to its high fiber content and its contribution of slowly absorbed carbohydrates, helping to keep blood sugar levels stable and to regulate intestinal transit. For this reason it is also useful in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, by preventing the absorption of part of the cholesterol.
