Following a diet based on organic foods gives us a great variety of interesting benefits to our health, as well as a lot of safety. Find out why.
In recent years the concept of organic food has become increasingly popular. Many people are opting for the consumption of so-called ecological, organic or biological products, as a way to improve and preserve both their health and that of the environment that surrounds us.
Organic food is that which comes from organic agriculture and livestock, which are characterized by their one hundred percent natural production, without the use of chemicals or fertilizers and without presenting any genetic modification. During the cultivation process, care is taken to maintain the ecosystem without altering it or putting its natural balance at risk.
The techniques used to obtain it are much more respectful of the planet, helping to reduce soil erosion and preserve the balance between nature and the food chain.
What are organic food or products?
Organic products are those from organic farming and livestock, which are obtained without the use of chemicals, and respecting both the environment in which they are produced and the well-being of the animals themselves.
In addition, we can find a large amount of organic food, among which stand out: vegetables, fruits, vegetables, greens, bread and meats, also including wines and drinks.
That is why we can indicate that there are both fresh and processed products, although it is always about taking care of that ecological value that makes them so special.
In our country, organic production has been legally regulated since 1989, while it is from 1991 when the European Union has legislation, being Regulation (EEC) No. 2092/91.
This means that European regulations regulate the entire process, from the production aspect to the transformation of the products, and their subsequent identification through labeling, as we will see in detail in the next section.
Of course, those foods that have not been controlled and certified under this standard, and no matter how healthy or natural they are, cannot be ecological, organic or biological.
How can you tell if a food is organic?
Generally, these foods must indicate their condition on the labels, and they are increasingly available more easily and more frequently in supermarkets. Consumers who prefer this type of food generally do so by avoiding GMOs and cases of food contamination, which can be harmful to the body.
Any type of product in different areas can be classified as ecological if it meets the requirements established to receive said certificate. The most common are vegetables, vegetables and fruits, due to the absence of pesticides, pesticides and fungicides in their cultivation, and meats, as long as the use of hormones, antibiotics and stimulant substances is prohibited in animal husbandry.
Labeling of organic products
For example, in Spain, the different autonomous communities present their own distinctive logo, although the following logos appear on all organic products, depending on the place of origin:
- Initials ES belonging, therefore, to Spain.
- The initials of the autonomous community from which the product is processed.
- The acronym AE, which comes to indicate Organic Agriculture.
- The control code of the body and the relevant control authority.
Advantages of eating organic food
They do not contain pesticides
The fruits, vegetables and vegetables that are grown under conventional agriculture use an average of more than 300 pesticides and pesticides, and it is estimated that at least half have traces of these substances. This can be harmful to health, as many of these chemicals are toxic. Studies have shown that they can be related to the development of allergies, intolerances or even cancer. Pesticides are designed to kill living organisms and therefore can be harmful to humans.
Consuming organic food prevents our body from storing toxic waste, since in its cultivation, farmer’s use 100% natural substances such as sulfur or plant-based preparations to combat pests.
They are healthier because they do not contain chemical additives
Organic food is healthier because it is free not only of toxic residues but also of chemical additives and synthetic preservatives, this means that they can be digested more easily by our body, without altering metabolic functions.
In addition, the foods are more nutritious, because when using natural fertilizers they have higher levels of vitamins and minerals than foods grown in the conventional way. The advantage is that the additives can cause health problems such as heart failure and migraines. In addition, in the case of cattle, they feed naturally so the risk of diseases is almost nil.
They have a higher level of antioxidants
Research has revealed that organic or organic foods have a higher level of antioxidants beneficial to human health. These substances have the ability to act to defend cells from damage and prevent tumor formation. It is estimated that they have between 20 and 60 percent more antioxidants than traditional foods, so consuming two servings of organic fruits or vegetables would equal the benefits of five traditional servings.
They taste better
Another advantage of organic food is that the vast majority agree that it tastes better. As they are made in an artisanal way, the food recovers its original flavor and preserves its natural aroma, which makes it tastier on the palate. For this reason, many chefs as consumers prefer this type of product for the preparation of their recipes.
They are more environmentally friendly
Currently, food production and transportation are responsible for almost 30 percent of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. This impact can be reduced by consuming organic food because the basis of this type of agriculture is to respect and collaborate with the conservation of the environment, and contribute to saving energy.
Ecological agriculture is concerned with fertilizing the land, respecting natural cycles, promoting biodiversity, maintaining animal habitats, avoiding pollution and doing the processes in a totally natural way to maintain ecological balance. It is a new consumer model that creates awareness among consumers.
